Generations of
Flavor, One Table
Murugan Idli Shop has served Tamil Nadu since 1981 with stone-ground batters, hand-crafted chutneys, and filter coffee poured the traditional way.
Soft button idlis in rich lentil sambar
Ghee-roasted idlis with gunpowder spice blend
Classic idli with fiery red chutney
Morning seatings fill fast...
Does good food need a story?
Since 1981, our family has carried recipes from Tamil Nadu's heartland to every Murugan Idli Shop table. We grind our own rice and lentil batter each night. We make our chutneys each morning. Nothing leaves our kitchen without a grandmother's approval.

Real feedback from guests who grew up with our idlis, and guests who discovered them yesterday.
The ghee podi idli here is unlike anything I have tasted elsewhere in Chennai. The gunpowder blend is ground fresh and you can taste the difference. I have been coming every Sunday morning for six years and the quality has never once slipped.
Murugan Idli Shop represents what a true tiffin house should be. The sambar is built on a proper toor dal base with tamarind that has been cooked down for hours, not minutes. Order the mini idli and let it sit in the sambar for sixty seconds before eating.
Filter coffee from Murugan is my morning ritual. The decoction strength is perfect and they still do the traditional pour from height. Worth every rupee.
The masala dosa is outstanding. Crisp all the way through with a filling that is neither too dry nor too wet. My only feedback would be that peak-hour queues can run long, but the food absolutely justifies the wait. I now arrive by 7:30 AM to beat the rush.
I brought my family visiting from Coimbatore here and they said it reminded them of my grandmother's cooking. That is the highest compliment I can offer. The coconut chutney is freshly ground and you can tell.
Forty years of eating idlis across Tamil Nadu and this shop remains in my top two. The ven pongal on winter mornings with a cup of filter kaapi is a small joy that never grows old.
